What if I feel uncomfortable meeting people online for Sober Dating?
If online dating isn’t your cup of tea, there are other ways to meet local singles in person. There are many ways to enjoy an alcohol-free dating life. Try the following in-person methods to find your sober sweetheart!
1. Meetup
Meetup is a website that has groups created for sober people. One of our favorite groups is Sober NYC- it’s a group of over 1,000 members that post events and share activities throughout New York City that don’t involve drinking alcohol or consuming drugs. Whether it be a coffee meetup or a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you are destined to meet some sober singles!
2. Volunteer
Try seeking out volunteer experiences at a local animal shelter or community organization. Not everyone who lives a sober lifestyle is in recovery, so meeting individuals with the same goals outside of a recovery program is possible.
3. Take a Class
Look on Groupon for a pottery class or another class that might interest you. This way, you don’t have to make a substantial financial commitment in your attempt to meet some new people. In recovery, you’re always in the market for new sober ways to spend your time, so trying out a Yoga or cooking class may also be another way to put yourself out there. Who knows, intro to Yoga could lead to a long-term relationship.
4. Go to an AA or NA Meeting
While dating is not encouraged within your first year of the program and dating someone from your home group could make your continued attendance uncomfortable if things don’t work out, I would not suggest dating someone from your meeting. However, it is still an excellent way to interact with other sober individuals. Perhaps a friendship made during a meeting can lead to a sober activity where other sober individuals will be, and it can increase your odds of finding a sober companion. Sober people at your meetings will also have mutual friends outside of your meetings, and maybe they are your perfect match!
5. Alumni Programs
Avatar Residential Detox offers extensive aftercare planning, to help prepare for real-life challenges. It does include an Alumni Program, which is another excellent support network where you can connect with other individuals who have completed our treatment programs and participate in sober activities like BBQs, Hikes, Movie Nights and Support Groups.
